ADHD Body Doubling

You know exactly what needs to be done.

The email needs answering. The invoice needs sending. The document is already open on your laptop. The task itself might only take twenty minutes.

Yet somehow, you still cannot get started.

This is a common experience for ADHD entrepreneurs. The problem is not necessarily a lack of knowledge, ability or motivation.

Often, the difficulty lies in moving from knowing what needs to happen to actually beginning the task.

That is where body doubling can help.

What Is Body Doubling?

Body doubling means working alongside another person while you complete a task.

The other person does not need to complete the task for you.

They may be working on something of their own, keeping you company or checking in at agreed points during the session.

The important part is that you are no longer trying to create focus, structure and momentum completely on your own.

For ADHD entrepreneurs, body doubling can be particularly useful when a task feels:

  • Boring or repetitive

  • Overwhelming

  • Unclear

  • Easy to avoid

  • Too large to begin

  • Important but not immediately urgent

  • Connected to paperwork, finances or administration

The presence of another person creates a gentle form of external structure. Instead of repeatedly promising yourself that you will start later, you have a defined time, a clear task and someone working alongside you.

Why Can Starting Feel So Difficult?

Running a business creates an endless stream of competing demands.

You may begin the day intending to update your client records, but then an email arrives. That reminds you of another task.

You open a second tab, notice something else that needs fixing, and suddenly an hour has passed without completing the original job.

The problem is not that you have done nothing. Your brain may have been extremely busy.

But all that switching, remembering, deciding and reacting makes it difficult to direct your attention towards one specific task.

Some jobs also carry more emotional weight than they appear to from the outside.

Sending an invoice might involve checking dates, calculating hours, finding the correct information and worrying about whether the client will pay on time.

Writing a simple follow-up email might bring up concerns about sounding pushy or getting rejected.

A task that looks small can therefore contain several hidden decisions, uncomfortable feelings and opportunities to become distracted.

Body doubling does not magically remove every difficulty, but it can make starting feel much more manageable.

How Body Doubling Helps ADHD Entrepreneurs

It Creates a Clear Starting Point

“I’ll do it later” leaves the task open-ended.

A scheduled body-doubling session changes that to:

At 10:00, I am opening the document and working on it for thirty minutes.

You do not need to wait until you feel motivated. The session itself becomes the cue to begin.

It Reduces the Opportunity to Avoid the Task

When you are working alone, it is easy to check your phone, tidy the kitchen, answer a less important email or decide that you need to research something before starting.

During a body-doubling session, another person is aware of what you have chosen to work on.

They are not supervising or judging you. Their presence makes it easier to notice when you are drifting away from the task.

It Makes the Task Feel Less Isolating.

Business owners often spend a large amount of time working alone.

When you are already feeling overwhelmed, sitting alone with a task you have been avoiding can make it feel even heavier.

Working alongside someone can reduce that sense of isolation. You still complete your own work, but you are not carrying all the effort of creating momentum by yourself.

It Adds Low-Pressure Accountability

At the beginning of the session, you decide what you want to complete.

At the end, you check what was achieved and identify the next step.

That simple structure can prevent a task from remaining vague and unfinished for another week.

What Happens During a Body-Doubling Session?

Body doubling does not need to be complicated.

A typical virtual session might begin with a brief check-in:

  • What are you working on?

  • What would make this session feel successful?

  • What is the first physical action you need to take?

  • Is there anything likely to distract or block you?

You then work independently for an agreed period.

Depending on what helps you focus, the session might involve:

  • Quiet working with cameras on

  • A quick check-in halfway through

  • Short work sprints

  • Talking through the first step before beginning

  • Breaking a larger project into smaller actions

  • Reporting back when each section is complete

The session finishes with a brief review of what was completed and what needs to happen next.

The aim is not to force you to work at an unrealistic pace. It is to help you move from avoidance or overwhelm into focused action.

What Tasks Can You Use Body Doubling For?

Body doubling can be used for almost any business task, but it is particularly helpful for jobs that are repeatedly pushed aside.

These might include:

  • Sending invoices

  • Following up with leads

  • Responding to emails

  • Organising files or documents

  • Updating a CRM

  • Planning content

  • Writing a proposal

  • Completing an application

  • Reviewing finances

  • Preparing for a client meeting

  • Uploading a course or digital product

  • Updating website pages

  • Making decisions about unfinished projects

It can also help when you have several smaller tasks creating mental clutter.

Rather than spending the day carrying a long list in your head, you can use a focused session to work through them one at a time.

Body Doubling Is Not About Being Watched

Some people initially worry that body doubling will feel like being monitored or treated like a child.

That is not what effective body doubling should feel like.

You remain in control of:

  • The task you choose

  • The goal for the session

  • How much interaction you need

  • Whether you want quiet or regular check-ins

  • What you consider a successful outcome

The body double is there to provide structure, presence and accountability—not pressure or criticism.

The best approach is flexible.

One day, you may need quiet company while completing admin.

On another, you may need help deciding where to begin before working independently.

Is Body Doubling the Same as Business Support?

Body doubling can be used as a standalone tool, but it can also form part of wider ADHD business support.

Sometimes the main difficulty is starting the task.

At other times, the task itself is unclear because there are too many priorities, missing systems or unfinished decisions behind it.

In those situations, it can help to combine body doubling with practical business support, such as:

  • Identifying the real priority

  • Breaking projects into manageable actions

  • Organising tasks and deadlines

  • Creating a workable weekly structure

  • Following up on commitments

  • Handling administrative work

  • Setting up systems that are easier to maintain

You may not simply need someone to sit with you while you work.

You may need help reducing the chaos surrounding the work in the first place.

When Might Body Doubling Be Worth Trying?

Body doubling may be useful when:

  • You know what to do but cannot begin

  • Important tasks are repeatedly being delayed

  • You work better when someone else is present

  • Working alone has started to feel isolating

  • You need a clear time boundary around a task

  • You are spending more energy thinking about the work than completing it

  • You want accountability without pressure or judgement

You do not need to use it for everything.

The goal is to recognise which tasks are consuming disproportionate amounts of mental energy and use support where it will make the biggest difference.

You Do Not Have to Force Yourself Through Everything Alone

Entrepreneurs are often told that they need more discipline, better habits or another productivity system.

But knowing another technique does not always solve the problem.

Sometimes you need external structure. Sometimes you need someone to help you identify the first step. And sometimes simply having another person present is enough to help you stop circling the task and finally begin.

Body doubling is not about becoming dependent on someone else.

It is about creating the conditions that make it easier for you to use the skills and knowledge you already have.
